Looking towards the Alburni, from the Sele valley, you can see a face with human features. And as he gets closer, you can almost hear the breathing of the earth. A legend tells that there is a sleeping Titan there, at the behest of the god of the seas Poseidon. The continuous struggle between Zeus and the Titans, who opposed the god’s power, reached its peak when the Cyclopes manufactured the Thunderbolt, the invisibility helmet and the Trident. The defeated titans took refuge in the mountains, and the god of the seas, brother of Zeus, transformed them into stone. This is why if you observe the Alburni mountains you seem to see a sleeping face.
The white limestone rocks have many paths and several places that are still unexplored. For the great poet Virgil, the Alburni were a refuge and inspiration, it seems that he often went to the mountains, where he began to write the Bucolics and the Georgics: “Among the woods of the Sele, and the thick oak groves of the Alburno, an insect lives in large swarms, which in Roman has the name assillo and the Greeks call estrus; aggressive, with its annoying buzz it terrifies and scatters entire herds of animals fleeing into the woods; a din of bellowing scourges the air, the forests and the banks of the dry Tànagro.”
