After breakfast, we check out of our hotel and drive to Pozzuoli to visit the Flavian Amphitheater, the third largest Roman amphitheater in Italy. Built during the reign of Emperor Vespasian, it can hold up to 50,000 spectators. Here the Patron Saint of Naples, San Gennaro (Saint Januarius) was beheaded and buried. For this reason, none of the ruins were touched and you are free to explore everywhere. Walk in the tunnels where gladiators and beasts waited before fighting for their lives in the arena.
We then head to the nearby Archaeological Park of Terme di Baia, which was where Roman aristocracy kept villas and spa facilities. The local natural springs of warm water and sulfurous steam coming from the volcanic subsoil attracted Roman nobility and emperors. The poet Horace wrote at the end of the first century BC that “no Gulf in the world is as splendid as that of Baia”.
Farewell lunch at a local Locanda where we raise a final toast to our Naples holiday.
