Matera is a city in the region of Basilicata, just a 3 hour drive from Naples. Known as “la Città Sotterranea” (the Subterranean City), Matera has gained international fame for its ancient town, the “Sassi“. Matera’s Sassi and Park of Rupestrian Churches are both UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1993. Matera is also the 2019 European Capital of Culture.
Morning pickup at your hotel* to begin our journey to Matera. Our first stop is in Basilicata wine country with a visit to a vineyard and its stunning Crypt of the Original Sin with frescoes dating back to the eighth century. Afterwards, we enjoy a lunch with locally-sourced food paired with wine produced at the vineyard.
After lunch we drive to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Matera, known as the City of Stones, and check into our accommdation for the evening. In the afternoon we have a two-hour guided walking tour of Matera’s Sassi to explore the narrow streets that wind their way through the Sassi, to discover the ancient houses and churches carved from stone.
Free time before the included dinner at a local trattoria to enjoy more regional specialties.
The following morning will be free for you to explore Matera and enjoy lunch on your own. In the early afternoon we leave Matera and drive for approximately one hour through the countryside to reach the ghost town of Craco. There we will have a guided tour to discover the history of this haunting place.
Afterwards, we return to your hotel or dropoff point*.
