Matera is a city in the region of Basilicata, just a 3 hour drive from Naples. Known as “la Città Sotterranea” (the Subterranean City), Matera has gained international fame for its ancient town, the “Sassi“.
Matera’s Sassi and Park of Rupestrian Churches, are both UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1993. Matera was declared a host of European Capital of Culture for 2019.
Matera preserves a large and diverse collection of buildings related to the Christian faith, including a large number of rupestrian churches, carved from the soft volcanic rock of the region.
We’ll pick you up at your hotel and drive towards Matera and stop at the Crypt of the Original Sin, known as the Sistine Chapel of rupestrian art: discovered in 1963 by a group of local youths, who noticed the splendid frescoes in what at the time, had become a shelter for sheep herds. Experts later dated the cycle of paintings back to the second half of the 8th Century.
Afterwards we’ll have lunch at the nearby agriturismo, where you’ll taste local produces paired with 2 wines produced there.
