Find out about Padula & Joe Petrosino with our full-day tour in the town of Padula.
This monastery is the largest in Italy, with 320 rooms and halls, and it also has the biggest cloister in the world! UNESCO designated the Certosa of Padula a World Heritage Site in 1998.
After our visit to the Certosa, we enjoy lunch in a local restaurant.
In the early afternoon, we visit Joe Petrosino’s childhood home which is now a museum.
Known as the “Italian Sherlock Holmes,” Joe Petrosino was born in Padula in 1860 and moved to New York City as a child. He joined the New York Police Department in 1883 and was promoted by President Roosevelt to detective sergeant in charge of the NYPD’s Homicide Division. When he was promoted to lieutenant he investigated the criminal activities of the Mafia. During one of the investigations he went to Sicily and was assassinated in Palermo.
Joe Petrosino was honored with a park in New York City and a number of books and films are based on his life. Paramount Pictures recently announced pre-production on a Joe Petrosino movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
